Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2006, $246,807)

Girls Incorporated of Huntsville will work with approximately 300 girls ages 5 to 15 and their families within their service area. The program goals include implementing a program strategy designed to enhance school performance of participants, strengthen relationships between participants and their families, and provide a comprehensive youth development approach through programs and activities that address prevalent risk factors among young girls such as alcohol and substance abuse, obesity, and teenage pregnancy. The performance measures of the project will demonstrate participant's academic improvement in major subject areas (reading, language arts, and spelling), families will demonstrate increased self-sufficiency, and girls will have increased knowledge to help them avoid areas that perpetuate generational poverty, thus enjoying an improved quality of life.
