Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2006, $24,681)

The purpose of this grant is to make it possible for Anahuak Youth Sports Association (AYSA) to continue its 12 year mission to keep kids off the streets and to provide boys and girls ages 5-17 positive mentored year round soccer and other sports league play during weekday evenings and on weekends during the day. The program provides these youth something positive to do, someone to do it with, and a nurturing community to support their youthful enthusiasm. AYSA's goal is to continue to provide opportunities for all youth in the program and to expand the program to include 200 more youth who wish to participate, as well as to engage in positive sports activities so that they can increase their self esteem and make healthy life choices in a supportive environment. AYSA measures the success by counting the number of youth on teams and the number of teams in the Anahuak organization. Throughout the years, the goals of Anahuak have remained the same to provide the joy and camaraderie of sport; to reduce youth's self destructive behavior; to improve health and academic achievement; and to provide community role models to help youth set goals and achieve them.
