Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2014, $191,506)

The Formula Grants Program is authorized under the Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (JJDP) Act of 1974, as amended. The purpose of this program is to support state and local delinquency prevention and intervention efforts and juvenile justice system improvements through a range of administration, compliance and program activities including those that address juvenile justice issues for Native American Indian tribes. The Puerto Rico Office for Socioeconomic and Community Development (ODSEC) will use FY 14 Title II formula grant funds to focus on the primary goals of achieving full compliance with the Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (JJDP) Act's separation and jail removal core requirements and continuing the Territory's commitment to delinquency prevention. Specifically, the Territory will continue implementing its non-secure areas project, work to improve coordination with law enforcement, establish video hearings to decrease the time juveniles languish in adult facilities while waiting to see a judge, further enhance facility training practices, and support sub-grantee projects that provide services to youth at risk of becoming offenders. ODSEC will also support programs and services that address juvenile delinquency for minors primarily in the 16 year old age bracket, the median age of juvenile delinquency in Puerto Rico. NCA/NCF
