Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2014, $20,000)

At the direction of President Obama, the Departments of Justice and Education launched the National Forum on Youth Violence Prevention (Forum) to begin a national conversation concerning youth and gang violence, raise awareness, and elevate the issue to national significance. This program aims to competitively select as many as five new sites to join the Forum's participating localities of Boston, Camden, Chicago, Detroit, Memphis, Minneapolis, New Orleans, Philadelphia, Salinas, and San Jose. The FY 2014 National Forum on Youth Violence Prevention Expansion Project is authorized pursuant to paragraph (8) under the Juvenile Justice heading, in the Department of Justice Appropriations Act, 2014, Pub. L. No. 113-76, 128 Stat. 5, 65.

Louisville/Jefferson County Metro Government will use FY 14 National Forum on Youth Violence Prevention Expansion Project funds to assist the development of a comprehensive plan that blends prevention, intervention, reentry and enforcement aimed at changing social norms that accept or tolerate high levels of violence.

Louisville, Kentucky's Safe and Healthy Neighborhoods Initiative will build upon its existing assets including strong neighborhoods and engaged faith-based and non-profit communities. The overall objective of the Safe and Healthy Neighborhoods Initiative is to see a dramatic reduction in violent crime in Louisville Metro City/West Neighborhood by: increasing high school and college graduation, increasing employment rate, enhancing the quality of intervention with individuals and families at the first sign of risk, and increasing opportunities for returning citizens in the community.

Stakeholders are well-positioned to build multi-disciplinary partnerships and develop balanced approaches and data driven strategies to address youth violence in their localities. The collaboration will engage community leaders from all sectors and further the innovative partnerships needed to meet the changing needs of all residents of the community. CA/NCF
