Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2014, $20,000)

At the direction of President Obama, the Departments of Justice and Education launched the National Forum on Youth Violence Prevention (Forum) to begin a national conversation concerning youth and gang violence, raise awareness, and elevate the issue to national significance. This program aims to competitively select as many as five new sites to join the Forum's participating localities of Boston, Camden, Chicago, Detroit, Memphis, Minneapolis, New Orleans, Philadelphia, Salinas, and San Jose. The FY 2014 National Forum on Youth Violence Prevention Expansion Project is authorized pursuant to paragraph (8) under the Juvenile Justice heading in the Department of Justice Appropriations Act, 2014, Pub. L. No. 113-76, 128 Stat. 5, 65.

The City of Seattle will use OJJDP FY 14 National Forum on Youth Violence Prevention Expansion Project funds to launch its Summer of Safety plan. Seattle Mayor Edward B. Murray has convened an interdepartmental team to identify evidence-based and evidence-informed strategies that can address the recent 2014 uptick in violence in Southeast and Central neighborhoods. This team, working closely with the Mayor's Office of Policy and Innovation, will launch its Summer of Safety plan.

The plan builds on the youth-focused work of Seattle Youth Violence Prevention Initiative and its Byrne Criminal Justice Innovation grant-funded hot spot youth crime reduction initiative. It will deploy a series of evidence-based and evidence-informed strategies to reduce violent crime among youth and young adults. With future planning, this initiative will align and coordinate with the planning made possible by membership in the National Forum, as the Mayor intends for the Summer of Safety to become the foundation for a long-term comprehensive plan for urban public safety that aims not just to address crime but to engage community and City stakeholders.
