Interrupting the Cycle of Violence: Insights from the Urban Institute’s Research-Based Practice Guidance to Reduce Youth Gun and Gang/Group Violence

With funding from the National Institute of Justice and the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention, the Urban Institute (UI) conducted an expansive research synthesis, extensive scan of practice, and engagement with subject-matter experts to identify and understand the current state of knowledge on reducing youth group/gang and gun violence and translate it into practice guidance. This guidance addresses how to build antiviolence infrastructure to ensure everything is in place for jurisdiction-wide, multicomponent, adaptable, and sustainable strategies to reduce youth gun violence and how to build effective programs and interventions that operate within and benefit from that infrastructure.

In this webinar, hosted by the National Gang Center (NGC), researchers from the UI will present the practice guidance from the project, as well as some of the key findings from the research synthesis and environmental scan on which that guidance is based.  Practitioner panelists will speak to how this guidance relates to the work they are doing in their communities, including the need for interventions to be individualized by the specific place, problem, and cultural context in which they are implemented.

As a result of this webinar, participants will be able to:

  • Summarize practice guidance on reducing youth gun violence associated with gangs or groups and the basis on which that guidance was developed.
  • Recognize how the practice guidance is relevant to the different stakeholder groups that work to address violence (e.g., local government, law enforcement, community-based organizations, funders, researchers).

As follow-up to the Interrupting the Cycle of Violence:  Insights from the Urban Institute’s Research-Based Practice Guidance to Reduce Youth Gun and Gang/Group Violence webinar, NGC will host an Ask-the-Expert session on May 11, 2022, which will dive deeper into the webinar topic to address pertinent questions and concerns from the field. This session will focus on practice areas outlined in the webinar and will invite practitioners engaged in violence reduction efforts to share their knowledge and practical experience. Participants will be invited to submit questions in advance, which will be addressed by the practitioners.

Registrants for the webinar will automatically be registered for this follow-up Ask-the-Expert session.
