Description of original award (Fiscal Year 1999, $99,839)

The Orleans Essex Visiting Nurses Association and Hospice is the fiscal agent for the Orleans County Prevention Partnership. The coalition provides outreach and technical support to three school districts in the Orleans and Northern Essex region of Vermont, with a population of approximately 32,736. In its most recent grant year, the coalition continued to implement its program goals and objectives by helping coordinate prevention efforts; assessing and planning for allocation of resources; ensuring that students in all three districts have access to relatively uniform, science-based, quality school and community-based services; and partnering with community-based initiatives to facilitate parent and youth involvement in prevention activities.
To achieve the two goals of reducing substance abuse among youth and strengthening community antidrug coalitions, this coalition will implement the following strategies: 1) continuing to provide technical support and direct services to K-12 schools in three supervisory unions; 2) providing a full-time Student Assistance Coordinator in two of the six elementary schools; and 3) supporting new initiatives in the community, such as the formation of a youth-directed, prevention-oriented theater group (Gorilla Theater) and the development of a new coalition in the Orleans Central Supervisory Union called Lake Region CAN (Community Action Network).
