Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2001, $99,959)
Fund for the City of New York is the fiscal agent for the Youth Futures Network. The network serves East Harlem youth and their families. The goals of the network are to: 1) reduce and prevent substance abuse among East Harlem youth and their families by addressing the factors in the community that increase the risk of substance abuse; and, 2) strengthen the collaboration among communities, governments, and private non-profit agencies to support collaborative community efforts to prevent and to reduce substance abuse. To achieve these goals, the coalition will implement the following strategies:
1) increase the community's awareness of the risks and harm of substance use;
2) develop a model of collaborative service provision among small civic and religious institutions to increase access to programming for at-risk community youths;
3) enhance mechanisms for sharing and distributing information among coalition members;
4) provide screening, assessments, and referrals to East Harlem youths and families to network-wide programs and services;
5) develop and distribute a Youth Futures Network brochure to the community;
6) collaborate with local agencies and businesses to connect youth to job training and/or internships opportunities;
7) monitor youth progress through the Juvenile Intervention Network computer application; and,
8) expand coalition recruitment efforts to increase membership representatives from education, business, parents, and youth.
