Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2003, $298,050)

The Christian Center of Pittsfield has designed the Children's Up-Reach Center for Success program to address the needs of children at-risk for juvenile violence, gang involvement, low school performance and drug abuse who live in the West Side neighborhood of Pittsfield, MA, the most culturally, racially, and economically diverse section of the City. There are three programs within the project: (1) Drop-In Enrichment Program (grades 1-3) provides after school programming in a safe and nurturing environment; (2) Summer Enrichment Program (grades 1-7) provides a six-week day camp program for children without other positive summer-time activities; and(3)Arts and Nature Program (grades 4-7) provides an introduction to the natural world and to arts and crafts after school hours.

The goals and objectives are designed to increase the positive role models in each child's life, to stem juvenile crime, decrease school absenteeism, and increase participant exposure to cultural events.
