Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2006, $197,446)
City Year, Chicago for the Heroes intends to work with 125 at-risk urban youth from 10 schools in the Chicago area. The goal of the program is to prevent and reduce delinquent behavior by providing safe and structured out-of-school opportunities that promote civically-minded, socially conscious young people who will be recognized as an asset and a resource in their communities. The Young Heroes is a leadership development and community service program for middle school students, grades 6 to 8.
City Year will measure short-term outcomes including the percent of youth who graduate from the program, participants ability demonstrate improved decision-making, coping, and critical-thinking skills based on how they interact in their community.
