Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2006, $187,588)

The study will use a quasiexperimental evaluation design to evaluate the efficacy of a SafeStart (comprehensive family support based system of care), as compared to voluntary San Francisco Human Services Agency (HAS) Family Preservation services for children and youth exposed to domestic violence and child maltreatment. The study will measure the effects of the two intervention approaches on mitigating the risk of subsequent domestic violence exposure, child maltreatment and future delinquency by assessing (1) post-traumatic symptomatology associated with exposure to domestic violence (2) the level of parenting stress and the quality of the parent-child relationship and (3) subsequent violence exposure and other forms of child maltreatment.
