Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2008, $900,000)

The goals of the Illinois Enforcing Underage Drinking Laws University Project are to enhance the ability of Eastern Illinois University, the community of Charleston, the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and the communities of Urbana and Champaign to conduct outcome-based prevention planning using relevant data and to reduce underage drinking among university and community youth by implementing best practices that increase the enforcement of underage drinking laws. The project seeks to increase enforcement and publicity of the enforcement of underage drinking laws and policies through collaboration with a community-campus coalition at each site. Each site will implement best practice strategies: compliance checks, street sweeps, bar ID checks, party patrols, Cops in Shops, DWI Enforcement with an emphasis on youth, review and/or enhance university and municipal policy, increase publicity of laws and university policies, expand late-night alcohol-free activities, and conduct social norms campaigns and educational programs designed for incoming university students and their parents. Progress will be measured through the collection of performance measure data that support a reduction of alcohol-related incidents, unintentional injuries and traffic injuries or fatalities. It will also be measured by tracking the increase in the number of policies created or enhanced, technical assistance events conducted, evidence-based strategies implemented and enhancing collaboration of the campus-community coalitions.
