Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2008, $268,305)
The YWCA's Children Services goal is to reduce anxiety and negative behaviors, support positive behavior, and teach coping skills that will assist them in overcoming barriers to school readiness. This project provides a 10-week in-home psycho-educational curriculum for children and their non-offending parent aimed at increasing resiliency. The project seeks to serve 200 households and 280 children. Progress is measured by five objectives: 1) Increasing parental knowledge about domestic violence and children; 2) Decreasing children's self-blame; 3) Children creating a safety plan; 4) Increasing children's conflict resolution skills; and 5) Increasing the family's positive support network. The intent of the project is to mitigate the effects of exposure to a batterer and the prevention of academic failure, substance abuse, replication of the violence in their own intimate relationships, and the myriad of other emotional disturbances linked to domestic violence.
