Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2008, $268,305)

The goals of Stan Hywet's after-school program over the next three school years are as follows: to improve reading and math achievement scores and passing rates; to engender better school attendance and behavior among program participants; to impact positively youth development; to provide a safe and productive environment for middle school students to pass the after-school hours; to provide access to and encourage participation with an Akron-area cultural institution; and to engage participants' parents in the program and encourage parent involvement with children's education and enrichment activities. The evaluation will examine Stan Hywet's progress against the program's stated goals, beginning with a baseline assessment of program participants at the inception of the project period which will provide a starting point against which progress can be measured. The evaluator(s) will also compare 'Frequently Sustained' participants' growth against that of students who do not attend Stan Hywet's after-school program as often or at all. A final evaluation will be produced at the end of the three-year period. NCA/NCF
