Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2008, $493,614)

Hindered by economic, social, and for many, language barriers, the youth of East Harlem have little impetus to stay in school, graduate on time, and going on to higher education. To stem this tide the East Harlem Tutorial Program (EHTP) proposes to start with their middle school cohort to make sure they are aware of and prepared for the rigors of high school and apply to high schools that meet their needs. EHTP will also work with high school students who will participate in the East Harlem University (EHU) Program, which includes the Summer Institute and Project: ON TIME (which concentrates on those most at risk of dropping out). EHU offers several pathways for students which are all focused on bringing them out of poverty. The goals of the program are to help students expand and strengthen their academic skills, explore college and career interests and develop a foundation of developmental assets that will ensure their success in college and the workplace.
