Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2008, $290,663)

The Dutch Broadway Elementary School, one of six within The Elmont Union Free School District, is experiencing many issues related to after school programs not limited to safety, availability, affordability and academic program design. Gateway Youth Outreach, Inc., (GYO), in partnership with The Elmont Union Free School District, proposes to operate the SAFE Program to address these needs. GYO intends to reach out to this at-risk population with programming designed to provide many services with a focus on academic achievement and reduction of at-risk behaviors directly associated with unsupervised youngsters at or outside the home setting. The program's primary activity will be to provide after school programming each day school is in a full day session for three hours from the time the regular school day dismisses. Outcomes, as related to in the proposal, will be evaluated and their competencies viewed throughout the program as to successes and to be implied innovations. Most importantly the program will track academic achievement, delinquent behaviors and the diminished instances there of and the ability of parents to be self-sufficient in their employment endeavors as they relate to the safe care of their children while they work.
