Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2008, $134,152)

The goal of this project is to encourage safe alternative activities during the hours when the youth are vulnerable to the stresses of their environment; encourage and support educational success; and facilitate problem-solving. Participants are encouraged to demonstrate good citizenship by participating in community service projects. At the time of enrollment in the RMBL program, participants complete a detailed in-take form. This information is used to set goals and to identify who might benefit from referrals. RMBL will serve at a minimum of 120 student athletes, ages 11-17, from five housing projects located in the Richmond Redevelopment Housing Authority and the south side of Richmond. Student athletes experiencing difficulties in school will be referred by guidance counselors. The programs will run from 5:30pm to 9:30pm two days a week. This program operates forty-five (45) weeks out of the year. It will combine personal improvement contracts, mandatory life-skills workshops, and instruction in basketball skills, followed by games to demonstrate achievement of skills. NCA/NCF
