Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2010, $100,000)

Through the Byrne Congressionally Mandated Awards program, the Office of Justice Programs helps communities improve the capacity of local justice systems and supports training and technical assistance programs and other efforts that strategically target local needs. This program is authorized to organizations identified in the Conference Report to accompany the Consolidated Appropriations Act, 2010.

The Child Abuse Program at Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters is the sole coordinated resource for medical and mental health care for abused and neglected children in southeastern Virginia. This project aims to improve the multidisciplinary approach of medical and forensic interview services by integrating an evidence-based mental health screening measure into these services, educating teams about the importance of using these screening tools and how to utilize their results, and piloting this screening protocol for national use.
