Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2012, $532,296)

The Formula Grants Program is authorized under the Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (JJDP) Act of 1974, as amended. The purpose of this program is to support state and local delinquency prevention and intervention efforts and juvenile justice system improvements. Program areas may include: planning and administration; state advisory group allocation; compliance monitoring; disproportionate minority contact; juvenile justice issues for Native American Indian tribes; prevention of substance abuse by juveniles; prevention of serious and violent crimes by juveniles; prevention of juvenile gang involvement and illegal youth gang activities; prevention of delinquent acts and identification of youth at risk of delinquency; and improvement of juvenile justice system operations, policies, and procedures including establishing a system of graduated sanctions, treatment programs, and aftercare.

The Arizona Juvenile Justice Commission (the Commission) and the Governor's Office for Children, Youth and Families are committed to continuing their efforts of collaboration and coordination within Arizona's juvenile justice system by directing available state and federal resources to respond appropriately and effectively to the needs of at-risk and delinquent youth and their families. The overall intent of the Commission is to uphold the core requirements of the Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention Act (JJDPA) and support a seamless continuum of delinquency prevention, intervention, and accountability services.
In order to achieve the Commission's goal, Arizona plans to distribute its 2012 award across seven program areas, emphasizing programming that deinstitutionalizes status offenders and alternatives to detention. Compliance monitoring will continue to play a significant role in 2012 activities. Other areas for funding include delinquency prevention, mental health, Native American programming and disproportionate minority contact.
