Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2018, $748,902)

This program promotes and expands services in detention and correctional facilities to incarcerated individuals who have children younger than age 18, and provides states and localities with funding to implement positive family engagement strategies and activities that address the needs of incarcerated parents with minor children. This program is authorized under the Department of Justice Appropriations Act, 2018, Pub. L. No. 115-141.

The County of Allegheny will use funding to reduce recidivism among a target population of approximately 200 men and women who are currently incarcerated to improve critical outcomes for their children, including reduced child protective services and juvenile justice involvement. In addition to supporting families in meeting the children and youth’s educational, health, and other needs, the program will prepare each parent, upon release, to be a resource to caregivers who want to improve their parenting skills.
