Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2020, $680,486)

This program will promote and expand services in detention and correctional facilities to incarcerated individuals and their minor children younger than age 18, and provide services to children of incarcerated parents by facilitating access to services that support their needs. This program will provide states and localities with funding to implement positive family engagement strategies and activities that address the needs of incarcerated parents and their minor children.

The North Carolina Department of Public Safety will develop and expand services that meet the needs of incarcerated parents and their minor children, prevent violent crime among adult participants and their minor children, and decrease involvement in the justice system. In order to achieve these goals, several objectives have been developed at the institutional and individual participant levels: increase knowledge among staff regarding the importance and role of the family in the reentry process, ensure designated reentry facility policies and procedures align with best practices for facilitating parent/child visitations and create visitation spaces that facilitate parent/child interaction within facilities.
