The Formula Grants Program is authorized under the Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (JJDP) Act. The purpose of this program is to support state and local delinquency prevention and intervention efforts and juvenile justice system improvements. Supported activities and efforts may include planning and administration, establishing, operating, coordinating, and evaluating projects directly or through grants and contracts with public and private agencies for the development of more effective education, training, research, prevention, diversion, treatment, and rehabilitation programs in the area of juvenile delinquency and programs to improve the juvenile justice system as found in section 221 of the JJDP Act.

The Mississippi Division of Public Safety Planning, Office of Justice ProgramsÂ’ primary focus is to address the core requirements: deinstitutionalization of status offenders, separation of juveniles from adults in institutions, removal of juveniles from adult jails and lockups, disproportionate minority contact, and alternatives to detention and diversion. FY20 Title II funds will be used to develop a system of care for juvenile justice which allows for juveniles to receive appropriate services at every level. The goal is to provide uniform services which allow for an improved juvenile justice system of efficiency and effectiveness throughout the state of Mississippi.
